How Should Patent Attorneys Review an AI-Generated Prior Art Claim Chart?
A checklist for reviewing AI-generated claim charts before relying on them in prosecution, diligence, licensing, or litigation workflows.
AI-generated claim charts are useful only if they are reviewable. A chart that looks complete but cannot be audited is worse than no chart because it can create false confidence.
Experienced patent professionals should treat AI output as a draft work product, not a conclusion.
Start With the Element Breakdown
Before reviewing citations, check the claim decomposition. If the elements are wrong, the mapping will be wrong.
Look for:
- missing clauses
- split limitations that should stay together
- combined limitations that should be separate
- antecedent-basis confusion
- wherein clauses treated as optional
- preamble language treated inconsistently
Fixing the element structure first makes the rest of the review faster.
Verify Every Citation
A usable chart should let you jump from the mapping to the source. For each mapped element, verify that the cited passage actually teaches the limitation and that the quoted text is not being overread.
Pay attention to generic context. A passage that describes the field may not disclose the claimed structure or step.
Separate Anticipation From Obviousness
A single-reference chart and a combination chart are different work products. If the chart relies on multiple references, the chart should make that clear and should preserve the rationale for combining.
Do not let a dense chart blur Section 102 and Section 103 theories.
Check Figures and Embodiments
AI may pull text from one embodiment and map it to a figure from another. That may be fine in some contexts and wrong in others. Review whether the mapped evidence belongs to the same embodiment or whether additional explanation is needed.
Preserve the Original
When a chart is edited, keep access to the original AI result. Patent Bear supports saved and edited charts while still making it possible to return to the analysis result that generated the chart. That matters when you need to understand what changed and why.
AI charts can save time. The professional value is in review, correction, and judgment.
Review a chart against the source
Use Patent Bear claim charts to inspect each cited passage and keep edits tied to the original evidence.
