How Do I Find the Status of a Patent Application?
Learn how to check whether a patent application is pending, abandoned, patented, or otherwise changed during prosecution.
The status of a patent application tells you where it is in prosecution. It may be pending, abandoned, patented, or subject to another procedural status.
To find it, start with the application number if you have it.
Use the Application Number
US application numbers look like 17/437,360 or 18/356,594. Application numbers are the best identifier for prosecution history and current status.
If you only have a publication number or patent number, open that record and look for the related application number.
Check the Patent Record
A patent record can show:
- filing date
- publication number
- grant number
- current status
- examiner
- assignee
- continuity data
- file history
If a published application later became a patent, the status may show as patented. If prosecution stopped, it may show as abandoned.
Review File History
The file history tells the story behind the status: office actions, responses, amendments, notices of allowance, terminal disclaimers, requests for continued examination, and other events.
Status alone is useful, but file history explains how the application got there.
Patent Bear Workflow
Patent Bear lets you search by application number, open the related record, review continuity, and access file history where available. You can also use chat to ask questions about prosecution documents and save useful notes to your library.
Why Status Matters
Application status affects competitive intelligence, freedom-to-operate review, portfolio monitoring, and filing strategy. A pending application may still change. An abandoned application may still be useful prior art. An issued patent has enforceable claims, subject to expiration and other limits.
Always check the status in context, not in isolation.
